When the trees are gone and
\ntheir bark peels away like an
\nold snake skin, and when the
\nsun forgets its place and falls,
\nshrinking until it is a marble,
\nmaybe then we can run away.
\nWhen only a film of gray dirt
\nenvelopes the Earth where the
\natmosphere used to be, when
\neven the buttermilk sky looks
\nrotten and flakey, spitting up
\ncoal for rain and soot for air,
\nmaybe then we can run away.
\nMaybe then we can change,
\nand maybe we can remember
\nwhat our love meant. Maybe
\nI will memorize your eyes by
\ncandlelight and feel the depth
\nof your voice as if your words
\nburied themselves beneath my
\nribs and stayed there forever.
\nMaybe then we will fight over
\nwhich road of dirt to take and
\nwhich piece of wet pavement
\nlooks more like home, but we
